Plot outline in IMDB: After escaping death, a troubled teenager is driven to manipulate a complex chain of events that will change the destinies of himself and those around him.

Another version: During the presidential election of 1988, a teenager named Donnie Darko sleepwalks out of his house one night, and sees a giant, demonic-looking rabbit named Frank, who tells him the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds. He returns home the next morning to find that a jet engine has crashed through his bedroom. As he tries to figure out why he survived and tries to deal with people in his town, like the school bully, his conservative health teacher, and a self-help guru, Frank continues to turn up in Donnie's mind, causing him to commit acts of vandalism and worse.

My Words

Donnie Darko was a great and thought provoking sci-fi movie. Most people will probably not understand the movie the first time they watch it, because they don't know what to watch for, but the 2nd time you watch the movie most will consider it a great and profound movie. Of course, if you don’t like it, you won’t watch it again. Another way to understand Donnie Darko is to read the articles in the official site www.donniedarko.com. This is not a movie to watch if one does not like to think during movies. Donnie Darko is also not a movie for the lazy movie watcher to watch. I normally like the easy brained movies that require no thought-process but this is one thought provoking movie that I give a 10 out of 10.

First of all, I appreciate the director very much. The director, Richard Kelly, who is only 25 years old, made his first film DONNIE DARKO. And Orson Welles, when he finished the “Citizen Kane”, was also 25 years old. Richard has his own ideas and ability to control them. I have just watched a movie The Promise during the eve of Christmas. Too many things wants its director Mr. Chen to represent, but he failed to control them, so many of them were lost.

Donnie Darko could be called as a sad poetry. It is full of the songs about the 80s, awakes reminiscent mood. Though there is difference between two countries’ culture, maybe I could not understand the exact meaning of songs, I could feel something sad, a little melancholy around Donnie and me. When Donnie waked up on the hill, a song called Never Tear us Apart by Inxs bring out the beginning of the movie. The rhythm made me feel life’s activity. So is the song appeared in the school, named Head over heels by tears for fears. Within these two songs everybody came out to us. And in the end, Donnie went with the Mad World to die.

It is a sci-fi film but comes from the common life angle. Even it could be judged as a movie about teenager’s life. Weird minds of young man, different methods of teacher, cheat of sanctimonious man, conversation between dad and son, love between girl and boy, etc. Yes, something about love! I should point out two scenes:

One is English teacher ask, Why did the children break into Old Misery’s house? (The Destructors by Graham Greene) Donnie said, Maybe they wanted to see what happened if they tear the world apart, to make things change. Then girl came in, teacher asked her to sit next to the boy you think is the cutest. At last girl’s eyes stopped at Donnie.

The other is Gretchen (the girl’s name) said to our boy,
You’re weird.
Sorry.
No, that was a compliment.
Well, look, you want to go with me?
Sure.

So is love. For love our boy sacrificed himself by the end of the movie.

The movie contains a lot of arguments against the traditional views of the public. These parts are interesting. For instance, when Miss. Farmer (a teacher) told that life is divided to fear and love, and Donnie refused to make an answer about the action of picking up a lost wallet. The whole spectrum of human emotion could not be so simple, just fear and love. So Donnie did a great thing…But of other more arguments I could not catch the words well, so forgive me not to mention them.

So far, I said too much…Do I wander from the point? I told you at the first line: it is a sci-fi film. Why I like it most is its precise science philosophy. There is a book named THE PHILOSOPHY OF TIME TRAVEL in the film, which is the key to the movie. I don’t want explain it either. If you really like this movie, you will come to me to talk about it. I hope you will like it. If you don’t like it, what I say will bore you.
